The Gold Cup begins, Gianluca Busio impresses, and our beliefs evolve
This is the first issue of a USMNT videoletter.
It’s Gold Cup time and Berhalter sent his victorious Nations League players away to rest up before World Cup Qualifying. This younger generation is comprised almost entirely of soccer nerds, so for the most part, setting aside the grouper incident, they all seemed to spend their vacations stateside at youth tournaments and MLS games.
This has been met with praise, which I understand to an extent, but where I’d personally prefer them is aboard Ronaldo’s yacht, punching tourists in Ibiza, and what have you. That will come with time. We’ll know we’ve begun to arrive when these likable young men move beyond the community engagement and instead take their July’s at points along the Mediterranean behaving like jerks.
Anyhow, the first-choice group is off resting/giving back, so the Gold Cup roster is made mainly of role-men and young aspirants, most all domestic based. Berhalter’s said the plan is to compete to win the tournament and to come out of it with the full WCQ pool situated.
It’s mainly about that second part though. We’re primarily watching these games with a mind to finalize backup spots and, in several cases, possibly some starting ones. I suspect if you’re reading this you already know the roles up for grabs and who’s reasonably in play at each and all that, so I’m going skip a full survey and close this first USMNT videoletter with a narrated video about the ascendant Gianluca Busio:
