Dest, Tillman, and Pepi sat down with ESPN for a joint interview. It gave us our first clear look into their little understood dynamic. The format was "Who is the best...?" The interviewer asks them, say, "Who is the best at cooking?", and then they try to reach an agreement.
Right out of the gate Dest declared himself the best at cooking. This bothered Tillman who said "It's not serious then," meaning the exercise they were presently engaged it. Tillman's specific objection: He was being asked to take it on faith that someone he's only ever seen eat bread -- "You only eat bread here, man" -- is a good cook.
Dest didn't back down, so the interviewer asked him what his specialty is. Tillman said under his breath "Making sandwiches." Dest said, no, not that. He makes other simple foods. He offered to show the host pictures. And challenged Tillman and Pepi to show pictures of their food. Pepi shot back he doesn't take pictures of his food because he doesn't need to flex.
A similar pattern played out later when Dest said he has the best sneaker collection. Pepi said he's never seen it. Then Tillman pointed out Dest wears the same shoes every day. Dest countered he keeps the collection at home and doesn't wear from it often. He told them they can see it if they come to his house. Neither Tillman or Pepi had a good enough collection to put up any more of a fight, and they conceded the point.
Later Dest was incredulous when Tillman and Pepi picked him for "Who is first to post on Instagram after a game?" They were incredulous that Dest was incredulous. Tillman then gave a specific example of Dest posting too quickly after a game and having to delete it. Dest denied any memory of the incident (It was the Feyenoord cup game and it did happen). Tillman lowered his head in defeat.
Analysis: Dest seems to be taking more of a leadership role than I'd previously imagined. I'd caution, though, against assuming this is always the dynamic. It may just be how it goes whenever Dest is asked to say who the best at things is.
That FIFA game must've been a real blowout.
